Hellmund Associates, founded in 1998, works with communities to protect and enhance natural systems, connect people to nature, reintegrate degraded lands, and help prepare for the challenges of the future. We help communities find and implement fundamental aspects of sustainability.
Our landmark projects are helping people achieve a better balance with nature. They include plans for the Chatfield Basin Conservation Network, Highlands Ranch Outdoors, US Highway 85 Green Infrastructure, and the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge. Designing Trails with Wildlife in Mind, our handbook for Colorado State Parks, has received international recognition. HA founder/president Paul Cawood Hellmund is the author/editor of the award-winning books Designing Greenways and Ecology of Greenways. |
Green Infrastructure
Nature provides valuable ecosystem services, when people don't preempt them. To be successful--for humans and for natural processes--these systems of green infrastructure need to be understood as part of a broader system and considered across scales. Hellmund Associates specializes in seeing and facilitating these kinds of connections, that require collaboration among diverse stakeholders and across jurisdictions.

Conservation
Conservation--especially large landscape conservation--requires considerable vision and collaboration if it is to be effective in sustaining wildlife and natural systems in general, while providing meaningful outdoor experiences for people. Hellmund Associates collaborates with a wide range of experts, users, and managers to find ways to conserve land that is effective today and also anticipates future changes to the environment and to communities.

Designing greenways is an important key to protecting landscapes, allowing wildlife to move freely, and finding appropriate ways to bring people into nature. This book by HA's Paul Cawood Hellmund and by Daniel S. Smith brings together examples from ecology, conservation biology, aquatic ecology, and recreation design to illustrate how greenways function and add value to ecosystems and human communities and are important elements of green infrastructure. See: Designing Greenways.
• "Designing Greenways is a well-written scientific and social survey that describes how greenways can be a part of sustainable landscapes." Natural Areas Journal • "This is the sort of book that will become, over the years, a dog-eared favorite in many land use planners' personal or professional libraries." Landscape Ecology • "Designing Greenways remains valid as a great contribution and provides a practical guide for planners, landscape architects, educators, students, citizen groups and conservationists to move from theory to action."
